Intervention(s) planned

Patients will be recruited from diabetic clinics at Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya hospital, Galle and the Colombo South Teaching Hospital.

Participants will be randomized into three arms.

Arm 1 will receive a single health education session at recruitment

Arm 2 will receive a health education session at recruitment and six months later.

Arm 3 will receive standard management according to clinic protocols.

The health education intervention will consist of a single session delivered using a power point presentation in Sinhala Language on a one to one basis (10 minutes) by the Principal Investigator.


Inclusion criteria

  1. Adult males and females (aged>18 years at the time of recruitment)
  2. Diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (As diagnosed by doctors at the diabetes clinic and meeting the criteria specified by the WHO (Definition and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and intermediate hyperglycaemia, WHO, 2006, ISBN 978 92 4 159493 6)

Exclusion criteria

  1. Pregnancy
  2. Type 1 diabetes
  3. Gestational diabetes
  4. Patients on haemodyalysis
  5. Inability to speak or understand Sinhala
  6. Cognitive, hearing or vision impairment


Primary outcome(s)

  1. HbA1c
  2. Lipid profile
  3. Health Literacy [using health education impact Questionnaire (heiQ), (Deakin University) forward and reverse translated into Sinhala].
