Intervention(s) planned
Study setting Medical officer of health (MOH) areas in Gampaha district, Sri Lanka.
Method of randomization A random cluster sampling method will be adopted with a MOH area defined as a cluster. 14 MOH areas out of 15 (excluding the Raagam MOH area) in Gampaha district will be grouped into seven pairs.the 14 MOH areas will be paired in a way that two MOH areas that are geographically far away would come in to a pair. Three pairs out of the seven pairs would be select randomly for the study. Out of the selected three pairs, the three MOH offices which are more towards to the South would be named as category A. The rest of the three MOH offices, which are more towards the North would be named as category B. MOH offices in category A and B would randomly select to control and intervention arm by tossing a coin.
Intervention package for Public Health Midwives (PHM) 1. Introduction to communication (30 min) 2. Video display on interpersonal communication (20 min) 3. Power point presentation on complementary feeding 4. Role-play by the study participants on interpersonal communication (1 hour) 5. Interactive discussion (30 min) These activates will be performed with in a half a day per MOH area one time.
Standard practice for the control group Control group would not be given any intervention. PHMs will undergo routine training which are conducted at the MOH office.
Inclusion criteria
Public Health Midwives who have been working for more than 6 months in the setting
Exclusion criteria
Public Health Midwives on leave and attached to any training program during the study period

Proportion of Public Health Midwives having “good inter-personal communication skills” rated by the Interpersonal communication skills assessment tool ( IPCST). |

Proportion of Public Health Midwives having “good inter-personal communication skills” assessed by a validated assessment tool. |
