Study setting: The study will be conducted within the Maternal and Child Clinic sites belonging to four Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas within the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS) area, Colombo.
Intervention: The participants will be recruited to the study at about two-months following delivery when they bring their baby for the first pentavalent vaccination.
The intervention will be delivered via a number of methods during the duration of intervention delivery: i. Face-to-face health education sessions during the vaccination/weighing clinic visits for the baby ii. Giving the participants an information booklet titled “Managing Weight After Delivery” which the participants can use as a guide for healthy habits iii. Providing participants with exercise videos containing simple aerobic, muscle stretching and strengthening exercises which can be easily performed at home.
The Face-to-face health education will take place at 2, 3, 4 and 5 months following delivery, coinciding with the baby’s MOH clinic visits. The end of the intervention will be at 6 months.
At 2 months – • Start of the intervention. • Health education session on how to eat healthy based on Food Based Dietary Guidelines for Sri Lankans, and how to avoid unhealthy food. • Duration – 30 mins
At 3 months • Health education session on starting to exercise after delivery • Participants are asked to start with slow walking for 15 minutes and gradually increase speed and time • Demonstration of simple stretching exercises. • Duration -20 mins
At 4 months • Demonstration of simple muscle strengthening and aerobics exercises as the participants’ fitness increases • Duration -20 mins
At 5 months • Health education session on the importance of sleep and relaxation. • Participants continue exercising • Duration - 15 mins
