Intervention(s) planned
Study Setting(s): Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts Sri Lanka. Intervention arm will include PHMs serving in Ampara RDHS. Control arm will include PHMs serving in Polonnaruwa RDHS
The intervention will be a brief training and educational intervention delivered in ‘training-of-trainers (ToT)’ design, on snakebite first aid, identification, and prevention. Conducted as a three-month long session including lectures, interactive discussions, and distribution of educational materials (audio-visuals, leaflets, learning modules). PHMs will then educate parents after conclusion of the training and education program. The intervention is on top of standard care.
Control: No training or educational intervention. PHMs in the control arm continue their usual health promotion activities without additional training on snakebite prevention and first aid.
Standard Care in Each Arm: Routine healthcare services provided by PHMs, including general maternal and child health services.
Following the educational and training intervention, PHMs in the intervention arm will deliver the educational and training intervention for parents living within the serving region of the respective PHMs (PHM area). Control arm will include PHMs serving in Polonnaruwa RDHS. Parents within respective PHMs regions will also be recruited as controls. PHMs and parents in this arm will be exposed to standard care practices.
Inclusion criteria
All Public Health Midwives currently serving (<60 years) under Ampara and Polonnaruwa RDHS of Sri Lanka.
Exclusion criteria
Public Health Midwives who are either in administrative roles or hospital practice and do not have direct interaction with the community or are not involved in providing health education and pre-hospital care on children will be excluded from the study. PHMs who do not voluntarily agree to participate in the study and provide informed consent will also be excluded.
Primary outcome(s)
1.
Knowledge regarding identification of snakes, first-aid management and prevention of snakebites among the rural communities exposed to the intervention as compared to standard practices immediately before and after the intervention in Public Health Midwives (PHMs): A structured self-administered questionnaire (available in English, Sinhalese, and Tamil) delivered online via Google Forms. |
[ Immediately and one-year after the intervention ] |
2.
Knowledge regarding identification of snakes, first-aid management and prevention of snakebites among the Parents, exposed to the intervention as compared to standard practices among parents, immediately before and after the intervention. Long term impact will be assessed 1-year after the intervention |
